What SHOULDN’T you do to whiten your teeth?

[X] Whiten your teeth at home with baking soda

Baking soda (not the same as baking powder!) is not the fastest way to whiten teeth, even though many people may have it inside their kitchen drawer, ready to use. Mistakenly, baking soda is often recommended as a home remedy which to whiten your teeth. However, this is NOT what baking soda has been intended for and it is certainly not harmless. Baking soda is an aggressive cleaning salt for cleaning items around the house, not the human body. Its chemical composition has a sanding effect, which helps to rigorously remove stains around the house. However, it can do severe damage to your dentures and even work contrarily by removing the protective enamel from your teeth, which will only make them darker over time…

[X] Regularly eat dark-coloured food

Blueberries are very healthy, but if you would like to keep your teeth white, it’s wise not to eat them too often. This is also case for dark-coloured marinades and foods that are naturally dark-coloured. So enjoy your favorite sushi, but take it easy with the soja sauce!

[X] Buy energy drinks

It’s common knowledge that drinking coffee, tea and red wine makes your teeth darker, but quitting every single one of these pleasures in life in order to prevent that would of course be rather extreme. What would be very wise however, is to quit drinking energy drinks. By drinking these, you literally rinse your teeth with aggressive acid at every sip… Do you find it hard to quit energy drinks entirely? Then use a straw! In this case, less liquid come into touch with your teeth, which will help to control the damage.

What CAN you do to get whiter teeth?

[√] Eat raw vegetables and fruit

Did you know that eating foods like cauliflower, apples and nuts also helps removing the stains on your teeth and making hem whiter altogether? And that it even helps prevent getting caries? All these foods have a natural sanding effect, which makes them a healthy choice in every possible way!

[√] Rinse your mouth thoroughly after eating citrus fruits

Admittedly, citrus fruits are literally full of vitamin C, so they are also very healthy. But they also contain a lot of acid, which affects the protective enamel on your teeth and causes stains in the long term. So don’t forget to drink a glass of water after eating fruits like oranges! A lot of acid is rinsed off immediately then, which helps getting whiter teeth.

[√] Regularly replace your toothbrush

When the bristles of your tooth brush are bent and worn out, they have far less cleaning effect. This is why it’s wise to regularly replace your toothbrush, regardless if it’s a manual brush or the brush head of an electric toothbrush. The guideline is to replace either one of these every three months.

[√] Brush your tongue as well

Bacteria gathering on your tongue also contribute to making your teeth look darker. So brush your tongue as well, using a soft toothbrush. It’s best to start at the back of your tongue, move the toothbrush all the way to the front, then thoroughly rinse the toothbrush with water and repeat this procedure, brushing every part of your tongue at least a few times.

[√] Really whiten your teeth instead of adding a cosmetic white layer

A ‘whitening pen’ that applies a thin white layer on the tooth surface only has minor cosmetic effect. The real colour of your teeth is still ‘hidden’ underneith the thin white layer and will be fully exposed as soon as you start eating or drinking again. By really whitening your teeth, the dark colour and stains are effectively removed, genuinely making your teeth several shades whiter.

[√] Use a whitening gel instead of a whitening pen or strips

The main disadvantage that all whitening pens and whitening strips have in common is that they simply have zero effect on all hard to reach spots, especially around gums, which is exactly where discolourations are most persistent… A whitening gel which is applied by a mouth guard DOES reach these spots, but also between individual whitening gels there are huge differences in terms of effectivity.
